Though the maiden flight of the A380 will certainly constitute an historic milestone in the programme, the flight itself is expect-ed to be fairly routine — more a question of getting a feel for the aircraft, says senior vice-president flight operations Claude Lelaie. "We have all the experience from previous programmes; we don't expect anything fundamentally new," adds Airbus chief test pilot Jacques Rosay. Both men will be on board for the first flight, along with Airbus flight-test director Fernando Alonso and flight test engineers Gerard Desbois, Jacky Joye and Manfred Birnfeld. Rosay is expected to be at the controls for takeoff, and Lelaie for landing. Preparation for the first flight has included long hours on the three cockpit simulators and the systems integration simulator. The latter can be connected to the Iron Bird, a faithful representation of the entire aircraft, including a full suite of flight control systems and equipment — computers and actuators, electric power generators, automatic flight controls, electrical racks, switchgear, hydraulic power sources, flight deck instrumentation, electronic engine con- trols, servo-actuators, black boxes, etc. Static testing by the CEAT test centre has been underway since November 2004 (see box) while fatigue testing starts in September 2005 (see box). The French and German aerospace R&D agencies, Onera and DLR, are performing vibration testing on aircraft 002. Test programme leader Jean-Paul Esquerre explains: "Every structure has its own specific vibration characteristics. If an external force, such as turbulent air flow around an aircraft in flight, applies an excitation to the structure, the mass of the structure will naturally tend to damp it out. However, a poorly designed aircraft can suppress this structural damping due to fluid-structure interactions, leading to flutter and the potential risk of damage and loss of control."
