Contrary to what some experts say, the 21st century may not see the end of world oil reserves. Nevertheless, it is very likely that the whole economy will have to live with high to very high oil prices. What are the implications for the airlines and aircraft manufacturers? "The crisis in our industry continues. Our fuel bill this year will be $83 billion. Equal to the GNP of New Zealand. This is $39 billion more than in 2003. The Fifth Horseman of the Apocalypse — the extraordinary price of oil — is destroying our profitability." These were the words of Giovanni Bisignani, the International Air Transport Association director general, at the 61st annual general meeting of the association on May 30th. While he was speaking the price per barrel was below $55. Today it is around $70, and still climbing!
