This year's Satel Conseil Symposium, held in Paris on 15-17 June, sought to answer the question: "Space-based telecommunications: crisis or business as usual?" The event got off to an upbeat start as Alcatel Space announced orders for two new telecom satellites — Galaxy-17 and Chinasat-9. The former is a 4. It craft built for PanAmSat, based on a Spacebus-3000B3 platform with 24 transponders in C band and 24 in Ku band. It features a power capacity of 9.5kW and a design life of 15 years. Chinasat-9 (4.5t) is intended to ensure coverage of the Beijing Olympic Games in 2008. It is based on a Spacebus-4000C1platform with 22 Ku band transponders, a power capacity of 11kW and a design life of 15 years.
