To prove its worth to Congress, the world's most expensive aircraft needs to come through the USAF operational evaluation with flying colours. A total of eight F/A-22 Raptors have been involved in the Initial Operational Test and Evaluation (IOT&E) programme being conducted at Edwards Air Force Base in California, where the F-22 Combined Test Force is located. The evaluation has been divided into two parts, starting with the initial phase at Edwards. This was completed at the end of September and will be the subject of a report to be published in December, which will lay the foundation for future production orders. In particular, the report will serve as the reference for a decision to boost production to a nominal level of three aircraft per month in 2006. By that time, 74 aircraft will have been built, including 19 this year and 25 in 2005.
