Financing for sustainable development in Africa: The potentials of domestic and international sources of finance for the UN sustainable development goals

There is a global consensus that substantial mobilization and reallocation of financial resources is required for achieving sustainable development; this makes financing a dominant theme in the post-2015 development agenda. This paper examines the sources of finance for sustainable development and the potentials of these sources for financing the United Nations sustainable development goals (SDGs). Using general method of moments, the study considers up to 47 African countries for the 1996-2017 period. The study shows that domestic sources of financing (such as government spending, domestic credit to private sector, savings, and natural resources rents) have significant positive relationship with sustainable development, meaning that increased domestic sources of financing can aid the SDGs. International sources of financing (such as remittances, external debt, FDI, foreign aid, and trade) have significant positive relationship with sustainable development, meaning that increased international sources of financing can also aid the SDGs. The study also shows that the interaction between domestic and international sources of financing have combined positive effects on sustainable development, which suggests that the right mix of domestic and international sources of financing can finance sustainable development and the SDGs. Further, control of corruption positively affects sustainable development, meaning that increased control of the flow of illicit funds can increase the impact of scarce resources on sustainable development and the SDGs.
