A series of initiatives led by London Metropolitan University to promote the capital's furniture designers and makers is proving so successful that plans are now in hand to develop some concepts further and significantly extend its support facilities. The initiatives have been spearheaded by Furniture Works, part of the University's Sir John Cass Department of Art, Media and Design, which opened in January 2003 to offer a range of services to designers and manufacturers of furniture, furnishings and related products. Its facilities include workshops for design development, prototyping and making components; library and research resources; full and part-time courses, and the services of technical and business consultants. There is also a large showroom for staging public and trade exhibitions, and it was here two years ago that the seeds of an idea were sown for the Isos Collection, which was launched at the Furniture Show at the NEC in the UK in January and the Milan Furniture Fair in April, this year.
