The $125m Sanctuary opened in September 2004 on Kiawah Island, 21 miles south of one of America's most historic and culturally significant cities - Charleston, South Carolina. The owner promises it will be the "greatest resort on the East Coast of the United States and beyond," according to Karen Kent, senior associate for Hirsch Bedner Associates (HBA) Design Consultants' Atlanta, Georgia, office. There is already talk of the resort achieving both AAA's Five-Diamond and Mobil's Five-Star ratings in the next two years. (There are only 22 hotels, resorts, and inns in North America that carry the highest ratings from both organizations.).
