Perhaps not quite everyone's heard of Stefano Giovannoni, but there are few people left on the planet who don't know his designs. His metal trays with the little men shapes pressed out of them for Alessi crop up in kitchens from Miami to Milan, while his Merdolino toilet brush - the one that looks like a potted plant - adds a buzz to bathrooms across the globe. But this versatile designer doesn't limit himself to plastic and metal. In the past, he has also designed fabrics for Japanese producer Nichibei as well as rugs - inspired by the eyes of cartoon character Pluto the dog - for Swedish company Asplund. His on-going bathroom range for Alessi includes everything from toilet bowls to funky bathroom textiles (though the latter were actually designed, in collaboration, by his wife Elisa Giovannoni Gargan). And he's also taking a renewed interest in upholstery with a provocative new armchair for Domodinamica hitting the stores now.
