Italy may be known as a centre for trend-setting design and fashion, but until recently its hotel scene lagged behind. While cities like London, Paris and New York have offered a choice of contemporary accommodations for some time, hotels in Milan and Rome were almost exclusively traditional. Now, though the two cities have finally caught up. At least three design hotels (the Es, the Aleph and the Hotel Art at the Spanish Steps) have opened in Rome this year, while April saw the inauguration of The Gray, the first truly contemporary hotel in Milan. Two stylish new hotels, J.K. Place and the Ferragamo's Continentale, have also opened in Florence (the city where the Ferragamo family started Italy's hotel revolution with the opening of the influential Gallery Hotel Art, at the end of the 1990's). Meanwhile, the Design Hotels group is adding seven hotels (including the Aleph, the Continentale and the Gray) to its previous list of five Italian structures over 2003. Here, architects Adam Tihany and Michele Bonan comment on their latest hotel projects in Rome and Florence.
