This research note shows that Belgian family firms reach higher performance than Belgian non-family firms. Family firms represent a considerable part in the economy of most countries and the family firm is the most common type of firm in the private sector (IFERA, Family Business Review, 2003). Numerous studies analyzing family firms have tried to explain their outperformance by diverse contractual and relational theories. Indeed, numerous papers have analysed how family ownership, family management, governance mechanisms, and generational factors influence firm performance (e.g. Anderson and Reeb, The Journal of Finance, 2003; Villalonga and Amit, Journal of Financial Economics, 2006; Bennedsen et al., Quarterly Journal of Economics, 2007; Adams et al., Journal of Empirical Finance, 2009; Kowalewski et al., Family Business Review, 2010; Miller et al., Strategic Management Journal, 2013). Even if numerous studies showed that family firms are superior to non-family firms, results concerning value creation in family firms remain ambiguous. These inconsistencies are mainly explained by differences in sampling method, family firm definitions, institutional settings, and methodologies (Block et al., Journal of Family Business Strategy, 2011).
