Identification Friend or Foe (IFF) systems emerged during the height of World War II. Both allied and axis commanders recognised the need for a mechanism to inform tactical military decisions and to positively identify friendly aircraft to prevent fratricide. While those early IFF systems were undoubtedly primitive, their basic concept of operations and objectives hold true today.
