Before we address the issue of India's future in aerospace, we need to discuss the requirements and trends in the global aerospace market. Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) are looking to lessen costs and have reduced time-to-market on final products. They want advantages in terms of capacity and they seek to have economies of scale. Last, but not the least, they want to mitigate the risks of a more and more globalised supply chain. A good illustration in this regard would be the case of OEMS such as Safran. What they have done in recent years can be seen as an indicator of things to come in the global aerospace industry. They have started working more often with Asian players. At the same time, while they have been trimming down their overall vendor base, they have been expanding their business in terms of output and revenues.
