摘要

The one design capability that Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd. (HAL) has yet to acquire is that for gas turbine propulsion systems. Admittedly, they had got in to that field years back, but only in a very small way. About the very earliest jet engine that HAL had designed in-house was the very simple HJE-2500 single-shaft axial-flow turbojet of about 1,150 kg-f thrust. It was followed years later, in 1994, by the PTAE-7 for the Pilotless Target Aircraft Lakshya. That engine was a single-shaft turbojet with a four-stage transonic axial compressor driven by a single-stage axial turbine. It had a thrust of 370 daN (380 kg-f) and was designed to be refurbished and reused after each recovery. The Chief Designer, Mr. T. V. Vareed, can be regarded as the "father of turbine engine design in India".
