JSC Concern Granit-Electron launched the development of radar homing heads in late 1950-s following trend of arming Navies with anti-ship cruise missiles. First experience of developing homing head was acquired during equipment of submarine-installed P-6 missiles. On parallel terms with adjustment of homing head for P-6 missiles the Concern developed homing head for Ametist system - the first missile system with submerged launch of cruise missile. Thus automated control system was implemented in that anti-ship cruise missile. In the mid 1960-s the Concern started development of the second generation homing head for the P-500 missile system. Homing head featured significantly increased target's detection range. Cruise missile was able to descend to low height beyond zone of engagement of ship-borne anti-aircraft systems and covertly approach to engaged target.
