Simulation in the training of military aircrew is not a new concept. An artificial - or synthetic - environment has been a critical component of the pilot training scene almost since the advent of the aircraft in the early twentieth century. As we step into the second decade of the twenty-first century, however, the use of simulation has increased dramatically, for a host of reasons, as budget austerity and increasing operational tempo create the demand for ever greater volumes of simulator time among defence forces.
