With the digital age upon us, it may have been a while since you looked at a world map. It is still fact, though, that two-thirds of the earth's surface is covered by water. This makes it understandable that global militaries place a great deal of emphasis on their maritime capabilities. While the first thought is often a Navy's surface ships or submarines, a critical component of a defence forces' maritime capability comes through the air. Both maritime patrol aircraft and naval helicopters play a vital role in intelligence, surveillance, reconnaissance, antisubmarine warfare and anti-surface warfare. These aircraft are called on to perform a range of missions, and operate in harsh, challenging and dangerous environments. That means the aircrews - pilots and co-pilots as well as the rear crews -must be well-trained and prepared to achieve mission success.
