Russia, which celebrated the five decades of the first human flight pioneered by Yuri Gagarin way back in April 1961 in a grand manner, is now looking at expanding its space programme at an exponential pace with a view to regain its position as the numero uno space power. Certainly, there is no denying the fact that the landmark spaceflight of the Russian cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin went to strengthen the leadership position in space of the erstwhile Soviet Union which had also to its credit the inauguration of the space age with the successful launch of Sputnik in October 1957. But then in 1969, USA took the then Soviet Union by surprise by successfully accomplishing the first human landing on the earth's nearest celestial neighbour moon.
