摘要

This is the ninth volume in the Epistles of the Brethren of Purity series which has been published since 2008 by Oxford University Press in association with the Institute of Ismaili Studies in London, under the general editorship of Nader El-Bizri. Many aspects about the identity and activities of "the Brethren of Purity and the Friends of Loyalty" (in Arabic Ikhwãn al-Șafā' wa-Khullãn al-Wafā') remain a mystery but most experts agree that they were the anonymous members of a tenth-century brotherhood with Platonic, Pythagorean, and Shī'ī tendencies, based in Iraq. The brotherhood produced a large encyclopaedic work, traditionally known as the "Epistles of the Brethren of Purity" (Rasâ'il Ikhwân al-Șafā') and which consisted of fifty, fifty-one or fifty-two treatises (depending on the sources) presented as epistles addressed to a "brother."
