The Galileo Affair continues to receive attention, and one of the relevant documents of the period is Tommaso Campanella's Apologia pro-Galileo that was published in Frankfurt in 1622 but was written early in 1616 when the Catholic Church was in the process of deciding whether to condemn Copernicanism. The work was first translated into English by G. McColley in 1937 and much more accurately by Robert J. Blackwell in 1994. Several Italian translations were made in the twentieth-century including those of Luigi Firpo (Utet, 1968), Salvatore Femiano (Marzorati, 1971), Paolo Ponzio (Rusconi, 1997) and Germana Ernst (Istituto poligrafico dello Stato, 1999). It is this last translation, which is excellent, that is printed in this book with the Latin on facing pages. A very good introduction by Michel-Pierre Lerner, which originally appeared in French in 2001, was also translated by Germana Ernst. Particularly rewarding are the illuminating notes that are found at the bottom of each page of the text.
