摘要

Johann Wier (1515-1588), the Brabantian humanist, became one of the focal points of the debate which evolved around the phenomenon of witch hunt in the second half of the sixteenth century. In 1557, when he published his De prestigiis daemonum for the first time, he joined an increasingly heated scholarly discussion on the existence and nature of the witches' Sabbath, the ways and whys the witches (at that time almost exclusively women) were involved in this, and, most importantly, whether or not they deserved capital punishment for their (imaginary) crimes.
