摘要

This is an interesting, original and well-researched study of an important topic. Its ostensible theme, that hands-on artisan experiment made significant contributions to eighteenth-century colour-science is entirely acceptable, but here, unfortunately, it is not clearly developed. There are, indeed, a number of structural deficiences, some of which are probably due to the origin of the study as a Ph D thesis. There are many repetitions, and the writing, though sometimes pleasantly homely, and even naive, is also wordy and often over-detailed (much of the raw matter, excellent as it is, could have gone into appendices).
