Around twenty-five years ago, 90% of all corrugated boxes used for packaging and shipping were sealed with gluing systems or with water-activated tapes. Although manufacturers found they were sloppy to apply, and shippers knew they were not very reliable, gluing systems and water-activated tapes - and in Europe UPVC tapes -were until the mid-1970s the dominant closure methods for corrugated boxes the world over.
