This chapter discusses jointly the application of upstream geomembranes in the construction and rehabilitation of fill dams, as the design principles and the installation techniques are quite similar. GSS with the geomembrane in an internal position, which exist on 20 out of a total of the 174 dams for which the position of the geomembrane is known, are briefly reported at the end of the chapter, before the sections on placement.
