Curcuma dye is a fugitive dye. In order to utilise this source for natural dyeing an investigation was carried out to find out the effect of sonicator dyeing with aqueous extract of Curcuma domestica Valet. The sonicator-dyed cotton, silk and wool samples were evaluated for dye uptake and fastness properties and compared with conventionally dyed samples. Our aim was to enhance the wash and light fastnesses of dyed fabrics. The sonicator-dyed samples showed a marked difference in washfastness, lightfastness and colour strength in terms of Chroma (C) and Hue angle (H) values. Colourfastness to washing and light were measured by Indian Standard methods IS-687-79 and IS-2454-85. CIEL~*, a~* and b~* (International Commission on Illumination CIE) values have been used for description of the colour model of dyed fabrics. The relative colour strength of dyed fabrics was measured by the light reflectance technique, using the Kubelka-Munk K/S values. It shows higher values for the wash and light sensitivities for the sonicator-dyed cotton, silk and wool samples.
