A United Nations panel recommended new restrictions for the insecticides carbofuran and carbosul-fan during this week's 11th meeting of the Rotterdam Convention's Chemical Review Committee. Following a meeting that ended Oct. 28 in Rome, the committee said the chemicals should be listed in Annex Ⅲ of the Rotterdam Convention, which requires its members to notify a receiving country when it plans to export restricted chemicals. Carbofuran is a highly toxic carbamate insecticide, acaricide and nematicide marketed as Furadan and sold by companies like the Philadelphia-based FMC Corp. Carbosulfan is another carbamate insecticide that is banned in the European Union. UN chemical experts will next decide whether to include the chemicals in the Rotterdam Convention's prior informed consent (PIC) procedure for hazardous chemicals and pesticides at the biennial Conference of the Parties to the Rotterdam Convention (COP) scheduled for 2017.
