Greenhouse gas emissions from EU countries continued to decline in 2011 and the bloc as a whole should comfortably meet its 2008-2012 Kyoto Protocol target, according to two reports published by the European Environment Agency (EEA) Oct. 24.However, without additional measures, current trends indicate the European Union will fall slightly short of its self-imposed 2020 target of a 20 percent reduction in emissions compared to 1990 levels, EEA said. EEA's Approximated EU Greenhouse Gas Inventory: Early Estimates for 2011 confirmed estimates published in September that EU emissions dropped 2.5 percent in 2011 compared to 2010 (35 INER 857, 9/12/12).
