摘要

Tokyo—Japanese police Sept. 18 raided a local waste management company that had been illegally dumping construction waste on its land site adjacent to the U.S. Naval Air Station at Atsugi, outside Tokyo, apparently to avoid the repeat of a diplomatic embarrassment Tokyo experienced several years ago from a dioxin scare near the facility and to preempt potential health damage claims from the U.S. military. A spokesman for the Kanagawa Prefectural Police Department and an official from the police's Social and Economic Division told BNA Sept. 20 that police raided approximately 70 locations near the naval station. A U.S. Embassy spokesman had no immediate comment on the raids. Public affairs officials from the naval air station were not available for comment.
