The global production of spandex fiber - invented in 1959 by DuPont chemist Joseph Shivers - has been estimated at approximately 340,000 tons in 2006, up from nearly 240,000 tons in 2003, despite the closures of several companies and deficits in raw material supply. Much of this added capacity has been in Asia - China will account for about 45% of production by 2008 - but there has also been growth in the U.S. and Europe. The price of spandex fell consistently from about $22 per kilo in 1986 to $12 per kilo in 2003, but happily increases in sales prices over the past few years have been successfully implemented, improving the economical performance of major players such as Invista, Hyosung, and RadiciSpandex, all of whom appear to be very much committed to future market development.
