World production of acrylic staple fiber continued to hold its ground at about 2.6 million tons annually at the end of 1998 (the latest available statistics~*), despite lower output in all three of the most developed regions. In the USA, for example, production fell 25% from 209,000 tons during the previous year to 157,000 tons. This was the lowest output for any year of the decade. In Western Europe, where acrylic fiber production is the greatest of the three regions, output also dropped a comparable amount from 701,000 tons in 1997 to 651,000 tons. Over the same period, Japanese production slumped from 198,000 tons to 180,000 tons.
