Acrylic, that most wool-like of synthetics, has been a fiber Americans have reached for when the winter winds blow. Socks, sweaters, blankets, even fake fur have helped ward off the chill. Now winds of change are whistling around the American acrylic fibers industry. Instead of sticking close to the fire, the two big USA acrylic fiber producers have chosen to strike out in new directions: notably, woven acrylics for home furnishings and specialty fibers for a variety of uses, including springtime apparel.
