This book investigates English language education in contemporary China based on three experimental urban schools in the Zhe Jiang province of China. An 'experimental school' is a new institutional category and plays a symbolic role in modern educational system in China, being used for new educational practices and other-related institutional changes, such as using a new adapted English language curriculum. The research reveals that how the reforms regarding English language education for urban schools were implemented in accordance with the modernization and globalisation of the Chinese nation-state. The author discusses the implications of the reforms and the related contradictions and dilemmas faced by Chinese institutions in the current era of late modernity. This volume consists of six chapters. Chapter 1 introduces English language education in China and the social situation of late modern China and provides a brief introduction to the structure of the book. Chapter 2 presents the methodological orientations and the approaches used in current research. The author also sheds light on some key information about the changes of school identity, the school setting and the situation of second language education. Chapter 3 introduces the images which the three experimental urban schools want to establish from social perspectives, combined with the aspects of educational modernisation and the neoliberalisation of contemporary China. Chapter 4 focuses on the common features of the schools with respect to meritocratic education: solidarity and ambivalence in the co-construction of collective membership and the moral education taught in the three schools. Chapter 5 scrutinises the English language teaching/learning practices and innovations in the classroom. Finally, Chapter 6 analyses the contradictions and dilemmas which the schools are currently facing in their English education in order to meet the requirements of late modern politics of identity.
