My NYU colleague, Ronald Dworkin, passed away on February 13th, 2013. He was not a comparativist in the classical sense of the word - but he was in the sense that we at I.CON try to cultivate. His conceptual and theoretical reach transcended the American legal system and was relevant well beyond its shores. His commitment to understanding other legal systems, but especially the constitutional and public law sensibilities informed by other systems, was deep, as evidenced by his years at Oxford and later at University College, London. His life, divided between Europe and the US, with frequent visits to the farthest jurisdictions, encapsulates that non-parochial approach. Our view of the discipline includes, of course, the careful comparison, doctrinal and conceptual, of law and legal institutions in different countries. But it also embraces reflection, research and writing that goes to the fundamentals of public law and becomes thus relevant beyond traditional boundaries.
