Annual and Intra-species Variations of Clonal Growth and Reproduction in Leymus chinensis Population on the Songnen Plain of Northeastern China

Clonal growth and reproduction of four populations of Leymus chinensis were studied in 1997 and 1998 on the Songnen plain of northeastern China. Two of the populations were located on the grasslands and two on adjacent sand dunes. Significantly greater vegetative and reproductive shoot densities, reproductive shoot differentiation and reproductive effort were found in each population in the moist year, 1998, as well as higher tiller densities, reflecting a strong response of clonal and reproductive growth of Leymus chinensis to moisture. Significant differences-were found in all of these parameters except tiller density, between the four populations in each year, indicating that the species clonal and reproductive growth also respond to changes in soil environment. Although tiller densities did not differ significantly between the populations in similar habitats, a large difference was found between grassland and dune populations.
