Aerosol precursor emissions from jet engines are related to the emission of sulfur(VI) in the form of SO_3. Conversion of SO_2 to SO_3 occurs via the reactions OH + SO_2≒ HOSO_2 followed by HOSO_2 + O_2 → SO_3 + HO_2. The efficiency is critically dependent on the concentration of OH, which was measured using laser-induced fluorescence at the exit of a rig designed to simulate the thermodynamic processes involved in the expansion of gases through the turbine and nozzle stages of a jet engine. OH concentrations on the order of 1×10~(10) molecules cm~(-3) were obtained.
