摘要

In literature, three-dimensional (3D) consolidation equation by Carillo (1942) exists in polar coordinates only that means for combined vertical and radial consolidation. A principle of super position of rate of settlement for 2D and 3D consolidations is introduced. Using this principle, Carillo's equation is derived in simple and short manner without any partial differential equations. Extending similar logic, new equations are derived for 2D and 3D consolidation in cartesian coordinates. The new equations are useful when the soil drains in two or three stratified vertical and horizontal (Z-Y or Z-Y-X) directions, but the settlement is allowed in vertical (Z) direction only. Such situation may arise when vertical strips are used in place of vertical drains.
