The design and operation of microfluidic-based devices, including microscale heat exchangers, requires fundamental understanding of electrokinetic transport phenomena. We present an analytical treatment of electrokinetic slip flow in rectangular microchan-nels under an externally applied pressure gradient and electric field. Our results suggest that fluid flow in rectangular microchannel can theoretically be enhanced by inducing slip. This relies on the capability to independently control surface charges and surface hydrophobicity. Our results provide general guidelines to the design of microfluidic-based devices utilizing electrokinetic transport phenomena.
