Andritz is to supply four 350 MW reversible pump-turbines and motor-generators, together with auxiliary equipment, for the ZhenAn pumped-storage hydropower plant in Shaanxi province, China. Andritz announced on 4 December that it had been awarded the contract, valued at more than €100 million, by the Shaanxi ZhenAn Pumped Storage Company, a subsidiary of the State Grid Corporation of China (SGCC). With a total installed capacity of 1400 MW, ZhenAn will be the first pumped-storage station in north- west China, and will be used for peak regulation, frequency regulation, and as a synchronous condenser, according to the group. In addition, it will serve as emergency standby reserve and black-start capacity for the Shaanxi power grid. The first unit will be commissioned by the end of March 2023, and all four 350 MW units will be put into commercial operation by the end of December 2023. It is the second contract to be awarded to Andritz by the State Grid Corporation of China for pumped- storage technology. In September 2017 the company received a contract worth just under € 70 million to supply two variable-speed pump-turbines and motor-generator units with variable speed and a nominal capacity of 330 MVA in the generator mode and of 354 MVA in the pumping mode, for the 3600 MW Fengning plant in Hebei Province. The power-plant, which will be equipped with twelve 300 MW pump-turbine units, will be the world's largest pumped-storage powerplant when completed in 2021.
