A South Korean consortium of the state water utility Korea Water Resources Corporation (K-water) and Hyundai Engineering Corporation (HEC) will develop, finance, construct and operate the Tina River hydroelectric project in the Solomon Islands, an archipelago in the South Pacific, following the signing of a series of agreements on 6 December. The 15 MW storage project on the island of Guadalcanal is the first large-scale infrastructure project to be developed as a public-private partnership in the Solomon Islands, and is designed to help reduce electricity prices for consumers by reducing dependence on expensive diesel generation through an increase in the share of renewable energy, while helping the country to meet and exceed its climate change mitigation targets. Five separate agreements were signed between the Government of the Solomon Islands, the state-owned power utility Solomon Power and the private developers of the project. The agreements, which mark the culmination of more than 10 years of preparatory work and three years of negotiations, include: a 34-year power purchase agreement (including a four-year construction period), between Solomon Power and Tina Hydropower Ltd (THL); a partnership between K-Water and HEC; a Government Guarantee Agreement; and, an implementation agreement between the Government and THL. Agreements were also signed between the Government of the Solomon Islands and the World Bank for US$ 33.6 million in support of the project from the International Development Association.
