GE Power, in consortium with China's Sinohydro Corporation, has been awarded an order for the main electrical and mechanical works for the 1285 MW Baleh storage hydro-power project in the Malaysian state of Sarawak, on the island of Borneo. The contract for the design, manufacture and supply of the main electro-mechanical equipment, including five 257 MW Francis turbines, as well as the balance of plant, is valued at about Malaysian Ringgit 595 million (US$ 159 mil- lion), according to a statement issued on 22 December by GE Power India, the lead member of the consortium. The order for the project was awarded by SEB Power, the power generation arm of Sarawak Energy, the state-owned power utility, to the consortium also comprising GE Hydro France, GE Renewable Malaysia and Sinohydro Corporation. A joint venture of the China Gezh-ouba Group and Untang Jaya Sdn Bhd of Malaysia was awarded a contract by Sarawak Energy in June 2017 to carry out the main civil works for Baleh, including a 188 m-high CFRD on the river Baleh. Construction work began in late 2017, and the project is scheduled to be commissioned in 2025.
