Wisconsin Public Service (WPS) was beginning to upgrade the dam at its 5.4 MW Wausau hydropower facility on the river Wisconsin as we went to press (May). The upgrade project, which is scheduled to be completed by the end of 2019, will include the installation of three new gates, as well as a new gate heater for winter operation, improvements to the dam's concrete piers and upgrades to the spillway electrical system, according to an announcement on 15 April. WPS said it had completed a project assessment and engineering detail in 2018 to replace three original tainter gates on the dam to reduce leakage, improve plant efficiency and reduce operation and maintenance costs.
