Georgia Capital has commissioned the 30 MW first phase of the Mestiachala run-of-river hydropower cascade in Georgia's northwestern region of Svaneti. The renewable energy arm of the local diversified group announced on 8 April that the commissioning had been achieved on time and within budget. Mestiachala 2, equipped with three Pelton turbines, has two intakes, one on the river Mestiachala and a second on the river Chalaati, a right-bank tributary. The group is also on track to launch the 20 MW second phase of the project, Mestiachala 1, in June 2019, it added, with an official opening of the plant planned for 28 June 2019.
