India's Union Cabinet, chaired by the Prime Minister Narendra Modi, approved in March a series of measures to promote hydropower, which include declaring large hydropower projects as a form of renewable energy. Previously, only hydropower projects with capacities of less than 25 MW were categorized as renewable energy, and supported under the non-solar renewable purchase obligation (RPO). With immediate effect, new large hydropower projects will be included in the non-solar RPO, with annual targets to be set by the Ministry of Power based on projected hydro-power capacity additions, according to the Government.
