Angola's Ministry of Energy and Water (MINEA) announced on 5 July the entry into commercial operation of a fifth 334 MW unit at the Lauca hydropower plant on the river Kwanza, raising its operating capacity to 1670 MW. The last of six turbines is scheduled to be commissioned in the first half of 2020. The project on the borders of Kwanza Norte, Kwanza Sul and Malanje provinces will also comprise a 65 MW environmental flow unit. When completed next year it will have a total installed capacity of 2070 MW. Lauca, which is located between the existing 960 MW Cambambe and 520 MW Capanda plants, comprises a 132 m-high RCC dam with a crest length of 1075 m, which impounds a 36 km-long, 15 km-wide reservoir with a surface area of around 185 km~2.
