Swiss hydropower plant operator Les Forces Motrices de la Gougra is to refurbish three units of the 69 MW Mottec storage power station in the southwestern canton of Valais. Modernization of the plant in Val d'Anniviers, at an estimated cost of CHF 31.2 million (US$ 31.6 million), will boost its installed capacity by 18 MW to 87 MW and its annual output by 5 GWh, equivalent to the average electricity consumption of 1400 households, the company's majority shareholder Alpiq announced on 9 July. In addition, the refurbishment will extend the control range of the plant, which will enhance its ability to provide ancillary services to the national grid, it added.
