Specialist power and water consulting firm Entura has been engaged by the Australian publicly listed renewable energy developer Genex Power as Owner's Engineer for the Kidston Stage 2 projects in North Queensland, Australia, comprising a 250 MW pumped-storage project and an adjacent multi-staged 270 MW solar PV project. The two projects are the main components of the Kidston Renewable Energy Hub, which will integrate large-scale solar with pumped-storage at the site of an abandoned gold mine. A 50 MW solar farm is already in operation at the site. Entura announced on 10 September that its scope of contract includes a review of activities (detailed design and engineering verification, review of EPC contractors' plans, and grid connection arrangement), project management, construction and commissioning advice. Entura previously completed the technical feasibility study for the Kidston pumped-storage project, focusing on optimizing the project to achieve a design which was technically and commercially feasible. The design of the Kidston project has as a result been optimized to reduce excavation and civil works with construction estimated to take less than three years, while the storage capacity of the upper reservoir has been increased by 25 per cent allowing from 6 hours to more than 8 hours of continuous generation.
