Real-time intelligent automation represents the cutting edge in efficient hydropower asset management. It includes the control and monitoring of critical turbine or pump components, such as the shaft seals and bearings. By digitizing these processes, the new Wartsila REvolution System has emerged as the state-of-the-art development in shaft seal management. The digital management system incorporates modern control theory and condition monitoring to provide intelligent, real-time active management of the sealing interface fluid film - the pressurised water interface. This minimizes wear and reduces the need for regular seal maintenance. When maintenance concerns are reduced, the operator's focus can be redirected to other key aspects of the hydropower plant's efficiency and output. The autonomous analysis of the seal performance serves to increase the predictability and reliability of sealing solutions in rotating equipment. By controlling, monitoring, and recording the ongoing situation, the system provides valuable data analytics to the operator. This significantly reduces unforeseen, and possibly costly, interruptions to the operational procedures.
