Construction went ahead recently of two small hydropower plants with a combined installed capacity of 50 MW on the river Kuban in Kara-chay-Cherkessia Republic in the North Caucasus region of Southern Russia. The Krasnogorskaya 1 and 2 stations, with an installed capacity of 24.9 MW and annual output of 83.8 GWh each, are designed to improve the hydrological regime of the river, lifting limitations on the capacity of the upstream 140 MW Zelenchukskaya hybrid hydropower plant, which combines conventional hydropower and pumped storage, and which is currently fixed at 70 MW. RusHydro has announced. The optimization of the river's regime will increase annual output of the Kuban Cascade by 230 GWh, according to the utility.
