The consortium Tractebel-Lom-bardi-Coffey has recently signed a contract with Future Generation Joint Venture for the design of the Snowy 2.0 Pumped Hydro Electric Scheme Capacity upgrade, the major new hydropower project now moving ahead in Australia (see also H&D Issues 3 and 4,2019). The original Snowy Mountain scheme is a large hydroelectric and irrigation complex in southeastern Australia that was built between 1949 to 1974. The Snowy 2.0 project aims to design and build an underground hydroelectric power-plant with a capacity of 2000 MW, connecting two existing water reservoirs in the Kosciuszko National Park. This major pumped-storage project will be instrumental in the country's renewable energy transition.
