The 290 MW Nam Ngiep 1 storage hydropower project on the river Nam Ngiep in central Lao PDR began commercial operation in early September. The owner-operator, the Nam Ngiep 1 Power Company (NNP1), announced on 11 September that it had received the Commercial Operation Date certificate from EGAT of Thailand on 5 September. The independent power project was developed by NNP1, whose shareholders are KPIC Netherlands, a subsidiary of Japan's Kansai Electric Power, EGAT International, and Lao Holdings State Enterprise, on a build-operate-transfer (BOT) basis, and will be operated over a 27-year concession period by the consortium, after which ownership will be transferred to the Government of Lao PDR.
