Construction of the Pwalugu multipurpose dam in northern Ghana was launched on 29 November at a ceremony attended by the President of the Republic of Ghana, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo. The project, which involved the single largest investment ever made in the northern part of Ghana, at an estimated cost of US$ 993 million, is being built by Sinohydro of China, on behalf of the Volta River Authority (VRA), Ghana's major power producer. The project, on the White Volta river, on the boundary of the Upper East and North East regions, will consist of a dam which will impound a reservoir with a maximum area of 350 km2, an associated 60 MW hydropower plant, as well as a 50 MW solar PV plant. It will be the first hydro-solar hybrid system in the country, with the association of the two technologies designed to complement each other to provide a stable electricity supply to the national grid. The hydropower plant, to be equipped with two generating units, is designed to provide 16.5 MW of firm continuous capacity, with output to be supplied to the Northern Electricity Distribution Company (NEDCo), a subsidiary of the VRA. NEDCo is the sole supplier of electricity to the three northern regions of Ghana: Northern Region, Upper East Region and Upper West Region.
